Blogging on a Saturday morning? You know it! Jax and Paul, where do we start? From the moment this thoughtful couple walked in our front door less than a month after we moved into our home with ice cream for us from the best local ice cream in our town, we knew we wanted to photograph their wedding and be a part of their celebration. These guys are ALWAYS thinking of other people, and would do anything for their friends and family, and we are so lucky to now be a part of that clan. Jax and Paul are the couple that openly love each other with all that they have, and pretty much impossible not to love them for it. We had an amazing time working with them, but more importantly, growing to know them and their families. On top of all of it, we had our first authentic Armenian meal with them at their rehearsal dinner, and it was delicious!
Jax was hoping for lots of snow on their wedding day, especially since Paul’s family is from Arizona, but instead their families were greeted with a sixty degree February day – not quite what we were expecting, but it allowed us to wander much farther and explore a lot more than we normally would be able to do in the dead of winter. Willowdale Estate offered the perfect cozy backdrop for two families officially joining together to celebrate two amazing souls.
Jax has an infectious smile. That is all.
Meanwhile across the hall, Paul and his groomsmen arrived looking quite dapper, and were ready for an amazing day!
Jax and Paul opted to see each other before their sunset ceremony to be able to have some outdoor portraits. What they didn’t realize, is that outside of logistics, it can be one of the most emotional parts of the day. Without anyone telling you what to do or staring at you to see what your reaction will be (although we may have had a bit of an audience from inside the estate!), it allows you to be fully in the moment together, forgetting about timelines and to do’s without any distractions. Paul didn’t have to worry about holding back tears, and the two were able to talk to each other without anyone listening (we shoot from far enough away so we can’t hear!), and start their wedding celebration together as a couple.
Only when they were ready, we took off with portraits of the couple around Willowdale.
Sometimes you just have to get down to get the shot ;)
Even their pup Syrah made an appearance to get in on the wedding party!
As we finished up our portraits, it was time for dad to see his beautiful daughter as a bride for the first time. I love dad first looks as much as those between the couple!
This bridal party is pretty amazing and knows how to have fun :)
If you would like to know if a first look changes how emotional the moment you walk down the aisle is, I think Jax and Paul can assure you that if anything, it shakes off all of the nerves and allows the excitement and emotion to shine through.
Jax’s dad held hands with both her grandmother and stepmom for much of the ceremony.
Before a few relaxed family photos, the couple popped outside for just a few minutes to enjoy the high of knowing they were married before heading back inside with everyone to celebrate.
How amazing is this shawl that Jax’s aunt made for her (fully expecting it to be much colder)?
Jax & Paul started their first dance as a married couple the same way they started dating: with the song Paul first sent to Jax to win her over when they met online. Of course, to break out into the fun side, they danced to “You’re The One That I Want” from Grease midway through!
When people ask us our favorite images to shoot, our answer is always “the ones we had no idea were coming.” This is a perfect example – Jax and Paul had planned a dramatic dip for the end of the slow part of their dance, but at the end of everything, Jax launched herself into Paul’s arms. It wasn’t planned, and this is my favorite image from their day. Nobody is thinking about what they should be doing, they’re just enjoying the awesome moment.
Jax surprised Paul with a groom’s cake to represent how much he loves rock climbing!
Being a pastry chef, Jax decided to have classic pastries as dessert instead of a traditional cake. I promise I didn’t drool on them, but I wanted to eat everything on the table!
As we said our goodbyes, Jax and Paul walked us out and we made a few quick portraits in front of Willowdale before we sent them back inside. It was an amazing day!
